Business Profile

Scholarship and research: the heart of everything we do LJMU is undergoing an exciting and challenging period of change, outlined in our ambitiousstrategic plan for 2012-2017, and world-class research and scholarship is embedded in everything we do. With 13 research centres, four research institutes, and 550 postgraduate research students, we are ranked in the top 25 English universities for PhD completion rates. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008, LJMU was top amongst modern universities for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, General Engineering, Sports-Related Studies and Architecture and Built Environment, and we demonstrated world-leading research in 70% of our disciplines.

Our external research income has more than trebled in the past ten years, and we are continuing to invest in our facilities and infrastructure to support our major research strengths in science, engineering, and in the arts and humanities; as part of our strategic plan we aim to increase our research ratings (REF 2014) at world-class level when compared to RAE 2008.

A modern civic university LJMU understands the importance of civic engagement for a large university, and we have developed a robust co-operative relationship within the city, region and beyond. In 2013 LJMU became a Principal Partner of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, a two-year sponsorship commitment which provides opportunities for LJMU students to participate in the acclaimed Liverpool Philharmonic Learning Programme and hear the renowned Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra perform. Our collaborations range across all disciplines, from a research and teaching partnership with Tate Liverpool, to LJMU Sports Scientists working with local football clubs and leading an international research study examining the health of jockeys.

Our staff occupy roles in local arts groups, charities and schools, our volunteer scheme helps staff and student teams work together on community projects, and our partnership with Liverpool Students’ Union manages relations between students and residents via student community representatives. LJMU already recognises and encourages staff and students through the Foundation for Citizenship, and in November 2013 we launched our new Corporate Charities Initiative to increase the opportunities to get involved. Over 18 months the new initiative will provide a platform to four local charities, including Age Concern and DaDaFest, to help them fundraise, increase the prominence of campaigns, and secure more support.

Through our work with the National Schools' Observatory and the Liverpool telescope, designed and built by LJMU in Merseyside and located on the island of La Palma, we have brought cutting-edge astronomy into over 3,000 British schools. We also we have links with 300 primary and secondary schools in the north-west, North Wales and Northern Ireland.

Such forward-thinking projects and partnerships cement LJMU’s position as an integral part of the city landscape and economy, and reinforce our core vision: ‘To be recognised as a modern civic university delivering solutions to the challenges of the 21st century’.

dream plan achieve LJMU’s ethos captures our aims as the University faces the diverse challenges of the 21st century. Founded in 1825 and granted university status in 1992, LJMU employs 3,000 staff and has 25,000 students studying from a range of 250 degree courses; with such a significant presence in the Liverpool landscape, the University has a deep appreciation of its responsibilities. Students are given full academic and pastoral support throughout their university experience, and the individual contributions of all our staff to the University’s success are highly-valued. LJMU is a university committed to equality and diversity; we have consistently been one of Stonewall’s Top 100 employers and the highest-ranking university.

About Us Ranked in the top 400 universities world-wide in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2013-14, the exceptional student experience LJMU offers is founded on high quality teaching, ground-breaking research and dedicated staff throughout the University.
