Keyboard Kids is a fun music class for children aged 5 to 11. In my experience, what children find the most difficult about learning a musical instrument is that they are trying to understand the basic elements of music at the same time as battling with the technical demands of the instrument. So what they are being asked to do very often is to work out which keys to press on a clarinet, how hard to blow into a trumpet, or how to move the bow across the violin, and at the same time remember that some notes last for 4 beats, some for 2 and middle C looks like this etc. It's no wonder that more than 50% of pupils give up learning an instrument within the first year!
Keyboard Kids is designed to prepare children who might later take up learning an instrument. It is a fun way to learn many aspects of music theory in groups where they can encourage and learn from each other. Through games and songs and working on keyboards they will learn to understand the concept of playing along with a beat as well as learning to read the notes on the stave. All of this is done with virtually no technical challenges and if by the end of the one year course, they choose to learn an instrument in one-to-one lessons, they will have a great head start and be able to focus on the specific features of the instrument.
