The asbestos found in garages is asbestos cement and this contains 10-15% Chrysotile fibres mixed with Portland cement. It was added to increase strength and longevity to the product. The reason why there is so much of it still around.

Chrysotile is a class 1 carcinogen classified by the World Health Organisation and can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and plural thickening on the lungs.
